Governor Uzodimma Inaugurates Governing Council for University of Agriculture, Charges Members to Drive Food Security and Academic Excellence
Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has inaugurated the Governing Council of the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo, emphasizing its critical role in promoting agriculture, food security, and academic excellence. The inauguration, which held today is part of the governor’s broader efforts to strengthen government agencies for optimal performance and service delivery to the people of Imo State.
In his address, Governor Uzodimma described the event as a catalyst for advancing agriculture and its value chain, as well as a practical demonstration of the state’s capacity to achieve self-sufficiency in food production. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to encouraging the university to focus on enhancing food production, urging the newly inaugurated council to align with this vision.
“This inauguration will be a catalyst to the promotion of agriculture and its value chain and a practical demonstration of our capacity to feed ourselves,” the governor stated. “It has been a deliberate policy of my administration to encourage this university to focus on enhancing food production, and your council should be abreast of this vision. You must go for goal delivery and be up and about to become the best university in Africa.”
Governor Uzodimma charged the council to explore partnerships with leading universities worldwide to bolster food security and innovate ways to improve academic and practical knowledge in agriculture. He also emphasized the importance of establishing agricultural demonstration farms, stating, “Practice what you teach by having agricultural demonstration farms, as your board has a direct bearing on the lives of our people.”
While expressing confidence in the council’s ability to deliver, the governor issued a stern warning against any form of discord between the board and the university’s management. “I will not tolerate any rift between the board and the management. There should be no conflict. Work as a team for inclusive growth and development. All of you were chosen for your integrity, and this should reflect in your work,” he cautioned.
Governor Uzodimma further pledged his administration’s support for the council’s success, urging members to contribute to the state’s manpower development. “I will do all that is required for the success of your assignment. Make a difference towards the manpower development of our state. We need thinkers, people with ideas, and people who are committed to helping us drive our vision,” he added.
In his response, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Nelson Alinno, assured the governor of the council’s commitment to working collaboratively with the government, citizens, and private entities to transform the university into a hub for producing valuable members of society. “We will work together to ensure that this university becomes a place where children will go and become valuable to society,” Professor Alinno pledged.
